FULLNAME: Robert Pinckney Hall
CITYSTATEZIP: Menomonie, WI 54751
EDUCATION: B.A., psychology, Earlham College. Ph.D., counselor education, Northwestern University.
OCCUPATION: Counselor, Counseling Center Director, Dean of Students at UW-Stout, 1969-2006
INVOLVEMENT: Member for many years, recently at the 9XM level. Call-in participant during The Midday and Saturday
morning Classics by Request. Send letters and e-mails regarding programming. Listen on average ten hours per day.
WHYSERVE: To represent those who seek a maximum of classical music during the daytime hours (now just 6 hours) on
the "Classical Music and News" network while supporting the need for/importance of a balance with news, ideas, and
public affairs programming. We have two fabulous networks, and I live and spend time with folks who listen to the
Ideas Network; I respect their needs and wishes, but am not sure those of us who feel that classical music is edifying
and an important vehicle for connecting with the wisdom, arts, and ideas of the ages are fully represented. I realize
that we have a state-of-the-art HD network that is primarily music, but 1.) this is not accessible to all, and 2.) a mix
of news and public affairs programming with music is desirable.
REPRESENTATION: I am retired and so am available to attend events and meetings. I participate in local organizations
in which I could represent WPR and seek support. I have participated in lobbying efforts at the local, state, and
national levels on behalf of the the local historic theater, the university system, professional organizations, and
political organizations.
FUNDRAISING: I have participated in or led fund-raising activities for two organizations that depend solely on
member contributions for support. I have learned that to make strategic, personal, direct requests (as WPR does
on the air) is effective, in addition to solicitations in other ways.
FEEDBACK: I have a number of friends who also listen to both WPR networks, perhaps even a 50:50 mix. I know I
can reflect their views adequately. I would also seek a more aggressive and regular listener feedback approach to
decision-making. To the best of my knowledge, the primary source of such information is asking for feedback during
fund-raising and offering a listener-feedback function on the web; these are good, but a more "intrusive" system of
surveying members wishes and desires would provide additional critical information for program and allocation
decision-making. WPR staff can attest that I am civil but persistent in my efforts to provide counsel and feedback on
programming direction.
RESPONSIBILITY: I have been involved with several community and public organizations in which I have been responsible
for the use and allocation of funds; in most cases these roles have had oversight of and have relied on financial
officers to provide clear information about and guidance in the use of organization funding. I would also use the
information gathered in the aforementioned audience survey approaches in promoting programming reflecting member preferences.
AFFILIATIONS: I have served in leadership and fund-raising roles on the Mabel Tainter Theater board; have served
on Menomonie City Council and on the board of Positive Alternatives in Menomonie.
