WPRA DIRECTOR - POSITION DESCRIPTION

The Wisconsin Public Radio Association (WPRA) Board of Directors is comprised of eighteen (18) directors plus the Director of Radio for Wisconsin Public Radio (WPR), who represents the licensees for the network. Ten (10) of the directors are nominated and elected by the seven various regions of the state. Eight (8) directors are nominated by the Board Operations Committee and approved by vote of the Board to serve at large.

Directors represent members statewide and are asked to serve a four-year term upon election or appointment. Election/appointment takes place every other year, and the directors take their seats July 1 (the beginning of the fiscal year).

The seven regions designated by listening areas are as follows:

Southeastern: WHAD (Delafield/Milwaukee) and WGTD (Kenosha)
Northeastern: WPNE & WHID (Green Bay), WHND & WHDI (Sister Bay), WRST (Oshkosh) and WSHS (Sheboygan)
Central: WHRM/WLBL-FM (Wausau), WLBL-AM (Auburndale) and WHBM (Park Falls)
Southcentral: WHA & WERN (Madison)
Western: WHWC & WUEC (Eau Claire), WVSS (Memononie) and WRFW (River Falls)
Southwestern: WLSU & WHLA (La Crosse) and WHHI (Highland)
Northwestern: KUWS (Superior) and WHSA (Brule)

There are two elected Directors from the Southeast, Northeast, and Southcentral regions. All other regions have one elected Director.

Appointed Directors are nominated to bring special skills to the Board or to represent diverse populations.

Members of the Board of Directors, an advisory body, review Wisconsin Public Radio policy and procedure, budget and finance, and many programming issues and concerns. The Board generates its own special projects and is represented in some WPR planning processes.

A Director is an advocate for Wisconsin Public Radio. To that end, Directors support Wisconsin Public Radio in four primary ways:

  • represent, speak and work on behalf of WPR in regional events and committees, recruitment of listeners and donors, and in legislative relationships;
  • raise funds on behalf of Wisconsin Public Radio for purposes outlined by WPR. This includes personal contributions and encouragement of the financial support of others;
  • provide counsel and feedback on programming direction and represent the views of other listeners; and
  • act in a fiduciarially responsible manner with contributions made to Wisconsin Public Radio.

A commitment to be a Director of the WPRA involves the following:

  1. A two-day meeting in the fall and typically one to three more full-day board meetings during the year (meetings are in various locations around the state; travel expenses can be reimbursed);
  2. Participation on a committee;
  3. Participation in WPR events;
  4. Involvement with and possibly chairing of a regional committee (volunteer recruitment and organization of regional events);
  5. Support of Wisconsin Public Radio through direct financial commitments, participation in fund raising, and through other appropriate ways.

Members of the WPRA Board of Directors include men and women from all walks of life. Their common bond is an appreciation of Wisconsin Public Radio and a willingness and commitment to contribute skills and energy to the Association’s support effort.
